NCBCA Teams of the Week-  FEBruary 3-8, 2020


1A BOYS – North Stokes 

Head Coach: David Anderson  

North Stokes pulled off wins against two higher ranked teams last week. The Vikings defeated defending 1A state champs Bishop McGuinness 70-50 on Tuesday. Then Friday, North Stokes avenged an earlier loss to #11 ranked East Surry, capturing the 71-62 win on the road. The Vikings are now 15-7 on the season.


1A GIRLS – Murphy

Head Coach: Ray Gutierrez

Murphy continues to roll as they maintained their undefeated record on the season last week and reached the 20 win mark. The Bulldogs went on the road to Fannin County HS (GA) and defeated the #8 ranked 4A team in Georgia 63-44. Two nights later, Murphy went on the road again and defeated #5 ranked Cherokee (57-41) to clinch the conference title (their 3rd in a row). The Bulldogs finished off the week defeating Swain County 70-40.  Murphy is ranked #1 by MaxPreps among 1A teams in NC and #10 among all classes statewide.


2A BOYS – Reidsville  

Head Coach: Jason Ross 

Reidsville had 2 important conference wins and 2 rivalry wins, 3 total victories last week.  The Rams beat 2nd place Carrboro 61-50 on Tuesday to open up a 2 game lead in the conference standings. On Wednesday Reidsville defeated county rival Morehead 75-66. Then the Rams finished off the week on Friday with big conference win over long-time rival Cummings 65-42.  Reidsville extended its win streak to 14 games and improved to 18-2 on the year and remain unbeaten in conference play. They are 12th ranked in NC among 2A teams by MaxPreps. 


2A GIRLS – Hertford County

Head Coach: Sha-Teisa Sharpe

Hertford County avenged a loss to Currituck earlier in the year when they won 69-27 on Tuesday night. Then Friday, the Bears won on the road at First Flight 68-41. Hertford County improved to 14-7 on the season and clinched, at worst, 2nd place in the conference.


3A BOYS – Rocky Mount

Head Coach: Mike Gainey 

Rocky Mount had 2 heart-throbbing, come-from-behind wins last week to improve to 10-10 on the season and move to within 1 game of first place in the conference with 2 games left to play. The Gryphons trailed nearly the entire game Tuesday night at Fike and were down 2 with 2.5 seconds to play needing to go the length of the floor. Jahsun Ward hit a buzzer beating 3 from the top of the key to give Rocky Mount the 68-67 win. Then Friday, Rocky Mount trailed by as many 18 vs Southern Nash before battling back to force OT. The Gryphons pulled out another thriller, winning 90-89.


3A GIRLS – Jacksonville

Head Coach: Monique Gidrey

Jacksonville picked up 3 wins last week. The Cardinals defeated Havelock 51-21 in a key Conference matchup, then defeated Northside (Pinetown) 70-29, before finishing the week with a 72-36 victory over Swansboro. Jacksonville has won 11 straight and have not lost since UNC signee Kennedy Todd-Williams came back from a knee injury. The Cards are now 16-3 on the season and undefeated in conference play.


4A BOYS – Pinecrest

Head Coach: Ben Snyder

Pinecrest captured 2 important conference wins last week. The Patriots went on the road and defeated Lumberton 57-49 and then held off a late game rally by Scotland County to win 56-51. Pinecrest improved to 19-3 on the season and clings to 1st place in conference with 2 games left. The Patriots have moved into the MaxPreps top 10 rankings among 4A teams in NC. 


4A GIRLS – Ashley HS

Head Coach: Adrienne Gale

Ashley continued to roll last week, using suffocating defense to win their 12th straight game. The Screaming Eagles allowed only 44 combined points to its opponents last week (only 15 total first-half points in the 2 combined games). Ashley defeated Topsail 64-26 and New Hanover 66-18 to improve to 18-4 on the season. The Screaming Eagles are ranked 13th among 4A teams in NC by MaxPreps and are undefeated in conference play.
