2019-20 TEAM OF THE WEEK AWARDS

NCBCA Teams of the Week-  FEBruary 10-15, 2020

 

1A BOYS – Mountain Island Charter 

Head Coach: Robert Price  

Mtn. Island Charter had 3 wins last week to clinch the Conference regular season championship. The Raptors defeated Queens Grant 78-62, Union Academy 52-42, and 2nd place Pine Lake Prep 87-61 to finish undefeated in the conference. Mtn. Island entered the conference tournament with a 17-5 overall record and the 5th ranked 1A team in NC according to MaxPreps. 

 

1A GIRLS – Alleghany

Head Coach: Kayla Carpenter

Alleghany continues to improve on last season’s 17-12 campaign as the Lady Trojans picked up 2 key conference wins last week to gain a share of the regular season Conference Championship. Alleghany defeated Starmount 50-37 and East Wilkes 54-29 to finish 11-3 in conference play. They are 22-3 overall and ranked #4 by MaxPreps among 1A teams in NC.

 

2A BOYS – Kinston 

Head Coach: Perry Tyndall 

Kinston ended the regular season as MaxPreps’ #1 ranked 2A team (#21 overall) in NC. The Vikings went on the road to county rival North Lenoir and won 82-42 before ending conference play at home on Friday with a 87-54 victory over Ayden-Grifton. Kinston went undefeated in conference play and finished the regular season 21-3, with those 3 losses coming to highly ranked opponents (Moravian Prep, Combine Academy and Farmville Central).

 

2A GIRLS – Mountain Heritage

Head Coach: Susie Shelton

Last week the Mountain Heritage won their final 2 regular season conference games (over Polk County 74-43 and Owen 63-24) to finish conference play at 12-0. It gives the Lady Cougars their 9th consecutive conference championship and head coach Susie Shelton picked up her 400th career victory. Also, Jr guard Hannah Tipton scored her 1000th career point. Mtn Heritage finishes the regular season 18-5 overall and ranked #7 in the state by MaxPreps among 2A teams.

 

3A BOYS – Northern Guilford

Head Coach: Kellen Parrish 

Northern Guilford enter last week in a 3-way tie for 1st in the Conference (with Morehead & Western Alamance). The Nighthawks faced both of those other 2 teams during the week. On Monday, Northern defeated Rockingham County 70-23. The next night the Nighthawks traveled to Morehead and escaped with a thrilling 90-89 3OT victory. On Friday, Northern wrapped up the conference championship with a 64-28 victory over Western Alamance. Northern Guilford finished the regular season 15-8 overall, 12-2 in the conference.

 

3A GIRLS – Northwood

Head Coach: Cameron Vernon

Northwood clinched the conference championship with 2 wins last week. The Chargers defeated East Chapel Hill 58-33 and Vance County 42-30 to finish conference play as regular season Champs at 13-1. Northwood sits at 19-5 overall on the year and ranked #23 in the state among 3A teams by MaxPreps.

 

4A BOYS – Grimsley

Head Coach: Darren Corbett

Grimsley continued its resurgence with 2 big wins last week. After finishing 12-15 last season, the Whirlies, under 1st year head coach Darren Corbett, clinched a share of this season’s regular season conference championship. Grimsley defeated city rival Page 39-38, knocking down a pair of FTs with 6 seconds left in that game on Tuesday night. Then Friday’s showdown with top 10 ranked Northwest Guilford took 2 days to complete. Grimsley led Northwest on Friday night 35-24 in the first half when Northwest’s Christian Hampton shattered the backboard on a windmill dunk attempt. That forced the game to be suspended until Saturday. Grimsley finally completed the 75-60 victory on Saturday. The Whirlies finished the regular season 16-6 overall.

 

4A GIRLS – Holly Springs HS

Head Coach: Peace Easton

Holly Springs defeated 2 higher ranked opponents last week to cap off the regular season Conference Championship. On Tuesday they defeated #9 ranked Millbrook 84-79 in OT. On Friday, the Golden Hawks topped #16 ranked Apex Friendship 82-66. Holly Springs ended the regular season undefeated in conference play and 17-6 overall. They are ranked #13 by MaxPreps among 4A teams in NC.
